Prospective Students

Welcome!

With over 105 years of activity, Oxford University is one of the oldest lacrosse clubs in Europe, and over those years we have never swayed from our commitment to a welcoming and friendly environment. OULC is well known across the university for being one of the most successful and fun university sports teams. No matter your experience or skill level we would love for you to join our club!

Preseason 2023

Women's

As Oxford terms start much later than other universities, we have a week of preseason before fresher’s week where we train and have some socials to warm everyone up before the BUCS league starts in week 1. The provisional dates for the 2023 preseason are Friday 22nd September to Friday 29th September, with freshers joining from Monday 25th September.. Preseason is a really fun week which will involve between 4-6 hours of training a day, lots of socialising and getting to know the city a bit better! The freshers have usually played a fair amount of lacrosse before, either at school/club/ regional/national level and thus we welcome people of all abilities and experience. If you are interested in coming to preseason, or want to ask any questions about whether the women’s team might be the right fit for you, please do get in touch with the captains, Vicky and Libby by emailing oulcwomensblues@gmail.com . Alternatively, direct your questions towards our Instagram account @ouwomenslax_

Mixed

OULC's Mixed Team will be hosting several preseason sessions in 1st Week Michaelmas, and we greatly encourage you to attend if you have any interest in playing for the side this season. The sessions are open to players of all abilities and are also suitable for those who are new to the sport, with beginners being able to pick it up quickly each year. Further information about the specific dates and times will be added to this page closer to 1st week so please check back once it nears the start of term. If you have any further questions, please feel free to email the captains, Max and Charlotte, at oulcmixedblues@gmail.com

Men's

Preseason with Oxford Men’s lacrosse is brilliant opportunity to get to know the team and the city before the excitement of term time kicks off. Preseason runs throughout ‘Week -1’ (just before freshers’ week) from Monday 25th to Friday 29th September. Each day involves around 4 hours of training, plus plenty of socialising in the evening where you can get a head-start with checking out all of Oxford’s fine pubs! We also have a good house sharing arrangement where current players can help provide accommodation for the week if needed. The men’s team has a really nice mix of experience levels, with some having played at school/club/national level and some never having touched a stick pre-university! If it’s the blue, the socials or just for a bit fitness, men’s lacrosse is for all. If you’re interested finding out more about pre-season, please drop our captains, Ewan and Shine, a line at: oulcmensblues@gmail.com

Women's Development Squad

OULC’s Development Squad is aimed at beginners and inexperienced women’s players who want to give lacrosse a go in a friendly and relaxed environment, with the potential of joining the university women’s or mixed teams in the future. There is training once a week, on Saturdays, where we will be teaching lacrosse rules and technique, running drills and playing games. We have friendly matches organised with the development squads of other universities which is a great opportunity to gain valuable gameplay experience with other learning players.

All equipment is provided and cheap mouthguards can be bought from us at training. Come along if you are looking to try something new or are eager to pick up your old lacrosse stick again! Don’t hesitate to get in touch with the either the Mixed or Women's captains, if you have any questions.

FAQs

Q: How much are subs each year?

Subs vary each year depending on our sponsors and other factors. We aim to keep costs as low as possible however the subs for last year were ~£190 per person. Colleges will generally subsidise a good proportion of this cost.

Q: What is the standard of the teams like? How difficult is it to make the team?

All teams at Oxford are of a high standard, with all teams placing high within their leagues. It is very difficult to predict the standard each year. That being said, lots of players on the Men's 2s and Mixed 2s are beginners to lacrosse/ have only played a little before. Come to trials and preseason regardless of how much you've played before!

Q: When are trials?

Trials dates are tbc for 2023.

Q: Does OULC organise social events?

Yes! OULC is known for having one of the best social calendars in Oxford Sport. Most Wednesdays there will be a social, either with other sports teams or as team bonding. We have a whole club crewdate at the beginning of Michaelmas and our Christmas celebration - Laxmas. Each branch of the club also has its own end of season dinners at the end of Hilary.
